Memorial Biography

She was born on June 6, 1935 in Wilkinson County, Mississippi to the late John Howard and Elaine Shirley Hatfield. Due to her father's untimely death and other family circumstances she was adopted by her Uncle Fred and Aunt Violet Shirley in 1948 and moved to Texas to live with them. She graduated from Port Neches High School in 1953 and moved to Newton that same year. She graduated from the Port Arthur Business College. She married George Cook on June 29, 1957 and they enjoyed 53 years together. He preceded her in death in June of this year. She was a retired Civil Service Secretary at Fort Polk and was later a Medical Transcriptionist. She was a member and honorary chairwoman of many civic and political organizations in the West Louisiana and Southeast Texas region. She was a Cub Scout Leader and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Newton where she was a Sunday School Teacher and a Pastor's Secretary to many Pastors who served there.
Her parents, Howard and Elaine Hatfield, Fred and Violet Shirley, two brothers, Harold Clyde Hatfield and Wayne Hatfield and a sister Anne Hatfield Capes also preceded her in death. She is survived by her daughters, Annie Jo Cook of Woodville and Rebecca Cook Dougharty of Jasper; son and daughter-in-law, George Cook, III and wife, Tammara of Princeton, Tx and Kevin Cook of Newton; adopted children, Kenneth and Winnie Hammack of Livingston and adopted daughter and care give April Mason of Newton; grandchildren, Jacob Leon, Andrew, Tara, Tayler and Stephen Cook, Katelyn and Seth Dougharty.; brother, Howard Hatfield and wife, Josie of Temple; sisters, Elaine Thompson of Greensburg, LA, Shirley McCann of Cleveland, TX.
